Natalia Criado, A Passion for Detail
Natalia Criado was born and raised in Colombia before leaving home to study industrial design in Milan. Once back home, she decided to focus on crafting beautiful objects by hand and set up her own art studio in Bogota. From these early years devoted to jewelry and small accessories, the artist forged a most rigorous passion for the infinitesimal and the infinite. Vases, cutlery, tumblers… her creations remain the work of a master goldsmith. In her studio, the artist uses a process to shape the metal traditionally used in crafting jewelry: lost wax casting. This consists of making a clay mold layer by layer, around a model initially all in wax. By heating the clay, the wax melts and leaves its mark: the mold is created and the molten metal takes the desired shape. Each piece so created is absolutely unique. Today, Natalia deploys her savoir-faire on tiny objects from daily life, each surprisingly original and just as precious, like these candle lids for diptyque, one of the rare brands the artist collaborates accepts to collaborate with. Poised on these lids all in black bakelite are the artist’s enchanting, sculpted, miniature figurines inspired by the universe of La Maison.
