Julien Colombier

Julien Colombier

Julien Colombier is a self-taught painter from Paris, whose usage of pastels and chalk brightens black backdrops to create tropical jungles and other hypnotic designs.
In 2015 he created a triptych which inspired a collection titled Imaginary Forest for diptyque. His color palette and his inclination for patterns are through lines that make for a strong parallel with diptyque’s decorative heritage.
By collaborating with the Inoue Brothers and One Kiln ceramic’s Yusuke Kido, he gives his work a new dimension: with his colors, Julien Colombier decorates and reimagines uniquely dark ceramic pieces, crafted according to an ancient Japanese technique involving the black ashes of the active Sakurajima volcano.
Thus came to be a singular collection of plates, bowls, and vases that combine contemporary design and tradition. Jungles, clouds, lush foliage ornate these everyday objects to form an assortment at the edge of figurative and abstract. "Made in Kagoshima” style cannot be mass-produced.
